What is it?
This can of wine from The Original House Wine is a Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa. Is comes in a 375ml can, which is the equivalent of half a bottle.
Yes, half a bottle. This can isn’t messing around. But luckily you can buy it by the can, rather than having to commit yourself to a whole 4-pack.
At 12.5% ABV this is pretty standard as far as potency. However, if you drink the whole can in one go you’ll definitely feel the alcohol.
What’s good about it?
It’s FINE. If you like Sauvignon Blanc it gets a pass. I am not in love with the strong, bright lemongrass flavour that is the trademark of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (I don’t hate it either, to be fair), but this wine isn’t from New Zealand.
It is from South Africa and it has a much more subtle Sauvignon Blanc characteristic. (As an aside sometimes when I think of all the wines I don’t like I start to wonder if I actually do like wine, but I’ll save my identity crisis for another time).
It comes in a very large can that measures half a bottle of wine so if you’re in party mode then this is going to help you along the way. Or you could nurse a can over the course of an evening. Whatever, I am not here to tell you how to drink your wine, but the point is – it is a large can.
What does it taste like?
The can says it is ‘bright, brisk & citrusy’. I always like to assess if I agree with the marketing on the can and in this case I do. It is indeed bright, brisk and citrusy.
This SB does not have the overt lemongrass flavor of New Zealand wines, but it still is distinctly a Sauvignon Blanc. It tastes of lemon and grass and has that green, crisp and acidic taste typical of this variety of wine.
What isn’t good about it?
This wouldn’t be the can of wine I would typically reach for. However, I will say that I’ve been forced to have many glasses of tepid and nasty Sauvignon Blanc at various pubs, do’s and social events and this can of wine is far, far better than your bog standard SB.
Would I buy it again?
I would throw a few in these in the fridge or ice bucket or bathtub filled with ice for a party.
